Anthony Joseph 'Botanique' Remix EP
Back in February, Anthony Joseph released Time, a collaboration with bassist and singer Meshell Ndegeocello, and for me, the spoken word album of the year so far, by far.
Since then he’s been touring that collection of spoken word funk, jazz, roots, far and wide. And this month, three remixes take three tracks into new territories of sound.
Osunlade‘s mix of Botanique is hypnotic, with some kind of witchcraft combining the trance-inducing deep house style with syncopation and spirit/soul vibe. This time, Anthony’s vocal is more dream-suggestion than hook.
Patchworks delivers a sweet soca treatment for the rapso of Kezi.
For me, the standout is Jukebox Champions‘ rework of Hustle to live. Already a favourite from the original LP, here it’s sublimely, simply, re-defined. Stomp/clapped and floated with keyboard, retaining all the soul of the original but adding a kind of electronic blood-chaser. Roll down the streets of your city with this in the headphones – a guaranteed mood enhancer.
